RoboExo, a robotic device, is an innovative, electromechanical, assistive wrist–hand robotic exoskeleton, developed over a decade of research, for rehabilitation of patients with neuromuscular deficient with upper-limb motor impairment such as stroke, spinal injury or any neurological deficit. The system integrates muscle activity using the sensors -surface electromyography (sEMG), actuators, and advanced control algorithms to assist selective wrist extension and finger flexion & extension movements and promoting inter-joint coordination motion, needed for activities of daily living.
The system can use muscle activity from both Extensor and Flexor compartment of forearm, assist patient in practicing movement of activity of daily living through repeated exercise. It promotes functional grasp-release and stretching, combining patient’s effort, robotic assistance, adaptive feedback and progressive training based on individual clinical presentation. It has been clinically validated in more than 100 patients, in improving motor relearning, coordination, and functional recovery under therapist supervision with minimal therapist intervention.
RoboExo device uses the patient’s own muscle activity to drive the therapy. This bioinspired, EMG-controlled approach directly benefit from motor intention in strengthening brain-muscle communication and promoting use-dependent neuroplasticity. The device is highly versatile and agile in adapting to individual patient needs, pace of therapy progression and in facilitating the pathway for rehabilitation recovery.
The device is equally beneficial in various stages of stroke progression, acute, subacute, chronic and late chronic stages of recovery. The device has multiple safety mechanism to make sure patients, and caregiver can operate it independently and comfortably at home as well without any hinderance or risk.
Lightweight (~3 kg), portable, and housed in a briefcase-sized system, RoboExo features a zero-barrier interface suitable for hospitals, clinics, home-based rehabilitation, and for the tele-rehabilitation applications, making advanced neurorehabilitation accessible as a fundamental right of equal healthcare access.
The device is designed, developed and clinically tested at Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and All India Institute of Medical Sciences. The device is protected with granted patents in India, Europe and USA. The device is licenced to our commercial partner for national and international market by FITT, IIT Delhi.
